Reading Frustration

It's so frustrating most days trying to get Logan ready to start Kindergarten this Fall. I'm sure I'm stressing myself out over nothing, which in turn stresses him out and causes more frustration. Some days it's just that I'm at my wits end...

He has no desire to read; could really care less. I don't understand this AT ALL! I've always been such a voracious reader, devouring books at a rate that would cause a skinny girl to come down with diabetes if it was ice cream!

Even when he was little, he would refuse to sit still long enough to get through a story, even a short five-page board book. He knows his alphabet, knows the sounds of each letter, and even knows how to sound it out for the most part. It's just getting him interested that we're really having issues with I think.

If it's math, figuring out how things work, or drawing funny pictures, he's right on it.

He loves jokes; maybe getting him a few kids joke books would help.

How do you get your kids more interested in reading?

Why Being A Dude Mom Rocks!

When I was growing up, I lived in a house full of silk plants, flowered furniture, and pink tile and carpet. My sister and I agree (at least I *think* she agrees...) that our house looked like a bottle of Pepto threw up in a forest.

I have never been a "girly-girl" and I never will be. I detest the color pink though I do admit to having a few pink items in my closet and pink toenail polish on occasion.  I have better things to do than troll through Sephora trying on all of the newest finds; I like what I use and see no reason to explore new possibilities in that department. I'm really not much of a shopper; I'm more of a 'know-what-you-need-find-it-and-get-out type of shopper. You will rarely see me in a dress; I'm more of a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl.

I think all of that is probably why I love being a mom to my boys. I don't have to worry day to day about ripping my clothes, smudging my mascara, or messing up my hair. Okay that last part was a fib, I do care about messing up my hair! But the point I'm trying to make is that I think I'm perfectly suited to being a "dude-mom."

I love nothing ore than getting down on the floor and playing cars or Legos. In our world, The Joker always beats Batman. Barbie doesn't exist here.

Let me rephrase that: Barbie doesn't exist in my boys' world, but she happily lives in her display boxes on shelves in my room. Plus I'm glad I don't have to worry about my boys wanting to play with them; they're mine and mine alone!

I'm so happy that I don't have to worry about how cute my daughter's hair looks today. Or if her hair clips match. Or if I should get the zebra and hot punk tutu or the leopard print and teal one (makes me shiver at the thought!).

Instead of stepping on little doll shoes and Polly Pockets, I'm frequently digging the blasted Legos out of my foot. But that's okay.

Because being a "Dude-Mom" rocks!

5 Ways To Get Your Kids To Eat Healthy!

Getting your kids to eat their vegetables seems to be a parental rite of passage. Every parent goes through the trials and tribulations of getting their child to eat that tiny pile of peas, those strange looking Brussels sprouts, or sometimes even those yummy maple-glazed carrot coins.
So today, I'm going to share with you "5 Ways" to get your kids to eat healthy, and hopefully these ideas can get your child to enjoy more healthy choices when it comes to meals. Ready?

Grow It!

Here's an easy way to get more fruits and veggies into your kids; grow them! A square foot garden is an easy economical and space-saving way for you to monitor what is going into your family's diet.

A creative way to get your children more involved; plant a pizza garden! Planting the ingredients for their favorite meal teaches your kids more about science, math, and nutrition.

Make It!

After harvesting all of those goodies from your square foot garden or pizza garden, put the kids to work in the kitchen and let them make their own meals! These kitchen gadgets are sized just right for little hands and make cooking together as a family more fun!

While you're cooking in the kitchen with your kids, make them the chef for the night. I love this little chef's coat; it's perfect for keeping spills off of your kids clothing and makes them feel more "official" in the kitchen!

Eat It!

You've harvested and cooked all those yummy fruits and veggies, now it's time to enjoy them! Many times presenting foods in new, different ways can make the difference between your kids cleaning your plate, or shoveling the food into their laps or on the floor for the dog to finish off.

What secrets do you use to get your family to eat more healthy?

A Boo Boo Mommy Can't Fix

When I was a kid, I had to endure school portraits with a closed smile because I was embarrassed by my teeth. When I was about 15 months old, I slipped and knocked one of my front teeth out. As the story goes, and if I remember it correctly, my mom put the busted tooth in a glass of milk and rushed me to the doctor where they were able to put it back in.

And then about a week or so later, I knocked it out again, leaving me snaggle-toothed until about third grade when my permanent tooth finally grew back in.

Insert Snagglepuss jokes here; I've heard them all...

"Heavens to Murgatroyd!"

There is actually a funny coincidence here though. I have a school picture of my dad, also from third grade, where he's missing the same tooth.

Now I am the first to say that I am definitely not graceful, AT ALL. Many times as a kid I found myself tripping over my own feet, running head-first into walls, and just generally being an all around klutz. I frequently sported bloody knees, scraped elbows, and goose-eggs in the middle of my forehead. It's a miracle I've never had a broken bone in my life or the need for stitches to put me back together again.

Well it's finally happened. The legacy continues. A boo boo this mommy can't fix and has to be taken care of by a professional.

Since Caleb was born, Hubs and I have always said that he was our most spirited child; the one to jump off roofs and into swimming pools, the one to crash into a tree on his bicycle, the one we're thankful we have health insurance for.

Some time in the three hour window between his nap and dinner, Caleb busted his front tooth. He didn't knock it out, but it's enough to make sure his future smiles are full of character! Unfortunately, I know it's the first of many injuries our family will endure in his growing up years. Maybe he'll have an interesting third grade picture too; time will tell!

Off to the dentist we go!

5 Ways To Organize Kid Stuff

So after last week's post letting you all know I wanted the challenge of finding five ways to make life easier, I received a comment from mrs. monica at Running Through Parenthood... In Heels asking if I could find ways to help her out!
I need a better way to organize snacks, sippy cups, plates, bottles, puffs, etc...for two kids at very different stages. I also need garage organization help!
Hopefully by lumping all of this together in place, she can find the tools she needs to solve her problems!

I found two great ways to help her organize kid snacks; in our house we have a concept similar to this for "dry snacks" using an old box from Costco that held pudding cups, but I definitely need to put these to use in the fridge for cold stuff like string cheese, apple sauce, and jello!
Snack Boxes

This first one is similar to what our family does to keep kid-friendly snacks like pretzels, granola bars and goldfish crackers contained in one area. If you're not afraid of portioning them out ahead of time, this makes a great way to see what you have and what you need more of. Plus, it's easier for the big kids to grab what they need without rifling through the whole pantry!

This is a great way to organize all of those refrigerated snacks that kids love. A box like this can be bought a dollar store for cheap, sometimes you can even get them 2 for $1.00! Definitely a way to keep those Go-Gurts from falling through the backs of the shelves!

Kids Dishes and Flatware

I love this idea and wish I had the slide-out shelves to do it! Bins like these can be bought on the cheap, and if you can't find these ones, why not use plastic shoe boxes! Another thing you could use could be your leftover shoe boxes covered in contact paper to match your kitchen shelf liners or even boxes you get from items being shipped to you!

I like this one because it's easy for the big kids to reach in and get their own stuff ready for meals. They can see what's there and can pick what they want. If you don't have the space for these in a cabinet, why not try using one of those plastic rolling carts that can be hidden away under a cute table cloth?
Kid Stuff in the Garage

Lots of families these days are looking for more and more ways to be frugal, especially when it comes to their kid's clothing and toys. If you're saving your older child's clothes and toys for hand-me-downs, this is a great way to store and label everything. I love this idea because it keeps everything stacked neatly, and you won't have to hire a weight  lifter to move the boxes on top when you need to get into the one on the bottom!

Thanks for the challenge mrs. monica and hope you're able to put these ideas to good use!

If you have a problem that you need a solution to, let me know in the comments below. Happy Friday!
