5 Ways To Be Prepared

Being prepared in the event of an emergency is something every parent worries about. Whether its slicing your hand open while preparing dinner in the kitchen or a natural disaster like an earthquake, there are several steps you can take to ensure that your family is prepared.

You don't have to be a "prepper" to appreciate the value of security in a crisis.

Have a first aid kit.

Keeping at least one kit in your house and one in each vehicle can not only save your sanity, but your health. Whether its a skinned knee, a bee sting, a car accident or a run in with a lawnmower, having first aid items easily accessible can make the difference between a minor accident and a major problem. Our family keeps one centrally located in the hallway bathroom, and even our oldest son knows where to go to get a bandaid. Make sure your family knows where your kits are and how to use the items in it.

You don't need to go out and spend big bucks on a fancy kit either. Buying the items on sale and stocking up when you run low can keep you within budget. Our kit is in an old shoe box.

Here's a list of what the American Red Cross says you should have in your first aid kit:

  • 2 absorbent compress dressings (5 x 9 inches)
  • 25 adhesive bandages (assorted sizes)
  • 1 adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch)
  • 5 antibiotic ointment packets (approximately 1 gram)
  • 5 antiseptic wipe packets
  • 2 packets of aspirin (81 mg each)
  • 1 blanket (space blanket)
  • 1 breathing barrier (with one-way valve)
  • 1 instant cold compress
  • 2 pair of nonlatex gloves (size: large)
  • 2 hydrocortisone ointment packets (approximately 1 gram each)
  • Scissors
  • 1 roller bandage (3 inches wide)
  • 1 roller bandage (4 inches wide)
  • 5 sterile gauze pads (3 x 3 inches)
  • 5 sterile gauze pads (4 x 4 inches)
  • Oral thermometer (non-mercury/nonglass)
  • 2 triangular bandages
  • Tweezers
  • First aid instruction booklet

Keep family health records together and make sure you have copies.

I have a binder that I keep all of our family information in. Each family member has a plastic sleeve in the binder where extra medical cards or copies are kept, as well as list of medical issues and medications and the kids immunization cards. If you don't feel comfortable keeping these items out, make photocopies and keep the originals in a safe place.

Try to keep 72 hour kits handy and rotate items every 6 months.

If the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina taught us anything, It's that in the case of a natural disaster, be aware that FEMA or the Red Cross may not get to you immediately. Ensuring that your family has enough food, water, and toiletries on hand for at least 72 hours is one of the easiest ways to ensure your families survival and comfort during a crisis. If you already have one, try working with neighbors or elderly family members to put one together for them. Add some entertainment to your kits too; a deck of cards, some crayons and a coloring book, or even some puzzles packed in Ziploc bags don't take much space and can help preserve your sanity. Don't forget about your pets either. They are part of the family.

Know your numbers and keep them where they are easily accessed.

A list of emergency numbers in an easily accessible place is an important tool to being prepared. Your local law enforcement, fire department and hospital numbers could be listed as well as the numbers for your doctor's office. Teach your children how to dial 911 and when it's appropriate to do so. Don't forget the poison control center number too; you never know when you're going to need it.

Try to become debt free.

In the case of a family member losing a job, becoming hurt so they can no longer work, or just for peace of mind, this is an important step to establishing your family's financial security. Becoming debt free ensures that if in the future your family's income is reduced in some way, it's one less worry off of your shoulders. The money you save by not having to pay ever increasing interest rates can be put to better use by paying off long standing debts and creating a nest egg to protect your family.

Budgeting, couponing, and creating a small stockpile in your home of things you use regularly can go a long way to ensuring that your family lives comfortably in a time of financial insecurity. Use websites like Save At Home Mommy and The Coupon Project for great tips on when and how to "stock up". Stockpiling does not mean you need 300 tubes of toothpaste in the garage. Just buying a few on sale and keeping them on hand saves you money in the long run; you've paid the lowest price possible and you've saved gas by not running to the store when you run out.

Using sites like Mint.com and DaveRamsey.com can help you track your spending and see where you can cut expenses.

5 Ways To Get Your Kids To Eat Healthy!

Getting your kids to eat their vegetables seems to be a parental rite of passage. Every parent goes through the trials and tribulations of getting their child to eat that tiny pile of peas, those strange looking Brussels sprouts, or sometimes even those yummy maple-glazed carrot coins.
So today, I'm going to share with you "5 Ways" to get your kids to eat healthy, and hopefully these ideas can get your child to enjoy more healthy choices when it comes to meals. Ready?

Grow It!

Here's an easy way to get more fruits and veggies into your kids; grow them! A square foot garden is an easy economical and space-saving way for you to monitor what is going into your family's diet.

A creative way to get your children more involved; plant a pizza garden! Planting the ingredients for their favorite meal teaches your kids more about science, math, and nutrition.

Make It!

After harvesting all of those goodies from your square foot garden or pizza garden, put the kids to work in the kitchen and let them make their own meals! These kitchen gadgets are sized just right for little hands and make cooking together as a family more fun!

While you're cooking in the kitchen with your kids, make them the chef for the night. I love this little chef's coat; it's perfect for keeping spills off of your kids clothing and makes them feel more "official" in the kitchen!

Eat It!

You've harvested and cooked all those yummy fruits and veggies, now it's time to enjoy them! Many times presenting foods in new, different ways can make the difference between your kids cleaning your plate, or shoveling the food into their laps or on the floor for the dog to finish off.

What secrets do you use to get your family to eat more healthy?

5 Ways To Show Your Love For The Hunger Games

By now everyone has probably seen The Hunger Games movie and fallen in love with it just as much as I have! I loved the book, and couldn't wait to see it on the big screen when I heard they were making it into a movie. One of the things I love most about books being adapted into screenplays is seeing if the movie's final result is truthful to the original story and I have to say that this one they got right!

It's always interesting to see the awesome, and sometimes weird, merchandise and ideas that are inspired a movie with this much popularity. Today I'm going to showcase some of the *different* ways that can help you show off how much you love The Hunger Games!

This is the Spring 2012 Capital Colours Collection inspired by the movie by China Glaze. My favorite colors? It's a toss-up between Agro, a sparkling green and Hook and Line, a smooth pewter color.

Can you believe the artistry in these cookies? I've also seen some fantastic cupcakes out there too; great for a Hunger Games viewing party when the DVD is released!

Oh, yes! A Hunger Games-themed wedding! I think the ideas here inspired by the movie and books could be great in any outdoor wedding! And what an amazing job on that cake!

This is one of my personal favorites! My friend @LoveAlisa created these necklaces for all of the girls in our book club. I love the subtlety of these and they are so gorgeous in person! You can get one of your very own too from her Etsy shop!

If you're not feeling well, how about curling up with your Hunger Games books on the couch in this!

5 Ways To Organize Kid Stuff

So after last week's post letting you all know I wanted the challenge of finding five ways to make life easier, I received a comment from mrs. monica at Running Through Parenthood... In Heels asking if I could find ways to help her out!
I need a better way to organize snacks, sippy cups, plates, bottles, puffs, etc...for two kids at very different stages. I also need garage organization help!
Hopefully by lumping all of this together in place, she can find the tools she needs to solve her problems!

I found two great ways to help her organize kid snacks; in our house we have a concept similar to this for "dry snacks" using an old box from Costco that held pudding cups, but I definitely need to put these to use in the fridge for cold stuff like string cheese, apple sauce, and jello!
Snack Boxes

This first one is similar to what our family does to keep kid-friendly snacks like pretzels, granola bars and goldfish crackers contained in one area. If you're not afraid of portioning them out ahead of time, this makes a great way to see what you have and what you need more of. Plus, it's easier for the big kids to grab what they need without rifling through the whole pantry!

This is a great way to organize all of those refrigerated snacks that kids love. A box like this can be bought a dollar store for cheap, sometimes you can even get them 2 for $1.00! Definitely a way to keep those Go-Gurts from falling through the backs of the shelves!

Kids Dishes and Flatware

I love this idea and wish I had the slide-out shelves to do it! Bins like these can be bought on the cheap, and if you can't find these ones, why not use plastic shoe boxes! Another thing you could use could be your leftover shoe boxes covered in contact paper to match your kitchen shelf liners or even boxes you get from items being shipped to you!

I like this one because it's easy for the big kids to reach in and get their own stuff ready for meals. They can see what's there and can pick what they want. If you don't have the space for these in a cabinet, why not try using one of those plastic rolling carts that can be hidden away under a cute table cloth?
Kid Stuff in the Garage

Lots of families these days are looking for more and more ways to be frugal, especially when it comes to their kid's clothing and toys. If you're saving your older child's clothes and toys for hand-me-downs, this is a great way to store and label everything. I love this idea because it keeps everything stacked neatly, and you won't have to hire a weight  lifter to move the boxes on top when you need to get into the one on the bottom!

Thanks for the challenge mrs. monica and hope you're able to put these ideas to good use!

If you have a problem that you need a solution to, let me know in the comments below. Happy Friday!

5 Easy Ways To Make Travelling With Kids More Tolerable

I don't know what it's like in your neck of the woods, but this SoCal weather we're having is GORGEOUS right now! Warm days with breezes and cool nights to snuggle with the little ones. That means Spring is here, but Summer is coming soon and so is Vacation Travelling Season!

With the economy being what it is right now, I'm sure most families are opting to travel by car to places closer to home rather than shelling out big $$$ for the family vacation of a lifetime. We're fortunate that all the great stuff to see in California is within a few hour's drive of us.

"Are we there yet?"

Ugh, not a phrase ANY parent wants to hear, especially over and over and OVER again!

So I've been browsing through Pinterest again, looking for great portable ways to keep both of my boys (and maybe your kids too!) entertained and happy during travel and wanted to share them with you!

Whether you use this one, find another free printable on the Internet, or make a list of your own, this is probably the #1 key to your family's happiness when travelling. Can't forget that favorite Spider if it's on the list!

Every family needs to have quick access to some kind of an emergency kit in the car. Keep this on the floorboard of the passenger seat or within easy reach during car trips so you don't have to unpack the whole trunk for a bandage or hand sanitizer. An easy up-cycle of something you'd probably throw away! Here's a quick tip: glue pieces of no-slip drawer/shelf liner to the bottom to keep it from sliding around!

I loved this idea the when I saw it! Another great trash-to-treasure find that we all have plenty of floating around in our diaper bags! This, a coloring/activity book or two and a lapdesk can keep the kids entertained for hours (or at least a few minutes!)

Personalized snack box? Yes, please! The key is to fill them up before the trip and make sure the kids know that once it's empty, that's it. My personal preference would be to fill it with Goldfish crackers, pretzels, nuts, raisins, dried fruit and maybe a couple of sweet treats. Make sure the snacks are age appropriate!

This baby has been the savior of boredom around here since we got it for Logan. He practices his writing, reading, and loves taking care of his virtual pet! Don't forget the batteries for this; if you have an adapter for your car, even better!

Hope these will be handy for you; I can't wait to test them out myself this summer!

Happy Travels!

(PS If all else fails, just hand over the iPhone and let 'em play Angry Birds; works every time!)
